Gillian Flynn's breath-taking thriller Gone Girl was our favourite novel of 2013 (if you haven't read it, buy it now), so we were seriously excited to see this exclusive shot, taken especially for US mag Entertainment Weekly (see Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in the first picture from the film, here).

And while the pic might seem like a giant spoiler, the film actually throws a few curveballs plot-wise that weren't in the book, so don't make any assumptions…

"There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I'd spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its eight million LEGO pieces and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie," Gillian told EW about the script.

Although the debate about whether a film can ever be as good as the book rumbles on, it didn't take us long to come around to the idea of Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in the lead roles as Nick and Amy, a couple whose marriage hits a rocky patch… then Amy mysteriously goes missing.

Whether the film will live up to the hype remains to be seen – and here are five more of 2014's novel-to-movie adaptations we're awaiting with bated breath. Read them now, feel smug later…

1.The Hunger Games - Mockingjay
Some critics felt Catching Fire, part two of the Hunger Games series, wasn't quite as thrilling as the first film – whatever, we still can't wait for part three. Mockingjay - Part 1, based on Suzanne Collins' cult novel, will hit cinemas in November with Part 2 arriving a year later. The third instalment sees beyond-feisty heroine Katniss discovering a plot to overthrow the Capitol and facing a decision about whether to become a key part of the revolution. But whatever it's like, a couple of hours watching Jennifer Lawrence do her thing never fails to bring us joy.

2. The Fault in our Stars
The often hilarious tear-jerker by John Green is brought to life by The Descendants' Shailene Woodley and easy-on-the-eye Ansel Elgort, playing teenagers with cancer who fall in love. We're hoping the studio won't dumb it down too much – although the movie's tagline, 'One Sick Love Story', has already caused controversy. Here's hoping Hollywood has done one of our favourite books justice.

3. The Book Thief
A novel narrated by Death himself, The Book Thief was published back in 2005 and sat on the New York Times bestsellers list for a whopping 230 weeks – so we're thrilled it's finally been chosen for a big-screen adaptation. Geoffrey Rush is the perfect choice to play the father of Liesel (Sophie Nelisse), a young girl living in war-torn Germany with a passion for reading. This one promises to be a real treat.

4. Divergent
Widely touted as the next Hunger Games, Divergent is a trilogy of novels set in a Chicago of the future which sees residents divided up into five personality types. Anyone who fits more than one type – a divergent – risks being killed if they're found out, and the novel follows 16-year-old Beatrice Prior as she learns to live with being an outcast. Starring The Fault In Our Stars' Shailene Woodley AND Elgort (they must have some chemistry) this is one which has a lot to live up to for fans in 2014.

5. Far From The Madding Crowd
If you're more of a classics kinda gal, this Thomas Hardy adaptation should get you feeling pretty hot under the bonnet. The film version stars Carey Mulligan as the novel's Bathsheba Everdene, a beauty living in the English countryside who's lusted after by a trio of men (including Mr Sienna Miller Tom Sturridge's Sergeant Troy – yum). We're curious to see how the producers will manage fit myriad plot twists, asides and surprises into a single film, but however they manage it, this should be gorgeous to look at in every sense.
